Welcome to Day 10

By now, you’re setting a new goal every day and looking at that beautiful picture (or more) and reminding yourself why it makes you smile. So, today’s challenge won’t be difficult, but I want you to have fun with it.

Today we are going to sing. Yup, you heard me. I’ll be honest, I only usually sing when people aren’t around. I’m terrible, and admit it. Despite that sad truth, I actually enjoy singing. The shower, the car, the kitchen, you name it. I find myself singing all the time. The one time I do make a point to sing in front of others, is sometimes to embarrass my daughter. Is that a mom-fail? Awful, I know, but I get a kick out of it, and in the end she usually ends up with a smile on her face. The way I see it is everybody should have a cool mom like that, no?

What will you sing?

Well, today you might pull out an oldie, or maybe one of your current favorites, and sing. Sing loud. Who cares who’s listening or who’s watching? Heck, get others to join you on your singing quest for building a happier you.

To make it more interesting, why not challenge yourself to learn every single word before you belt it out and sing the joys of your completed challenge? Sure, you may be listening to one song several times, but before the age of Internet, that was our only way to learn the lyrics, am I right? And if you’re a parent, it’s no different than what your children have done to you, re-reading books for the millionth time, or watching the same movie until you can recite every line. The only difference is, this time, it’s for you.

Have fun with this. Travel back to your high school years and pick a song that has special meaning. Maybe it’s a song you haven’t heard in a long time. Whatever it is, find it, learn it, and sing it at the top of your lungs.

As usual, no excuses. Every obstacle has an alternative route. If you find yourself having trouble putting you finger on that perfect song, get some inspiration here. You can search any year you want. Another option is to turn on the radio and go with that song. It might not hold as much meaning, but in the end, it doesn’t have to be about the song choice. The final result is you having fun, feeling good, and smiling about it.

You may already know studies show singing and happiness go hand in hand. But did you know several studies show that people who sing in groups benefit the most, and claim to have a more satisfying life, with less anxiety? If you’d like to read more about it, check this out. Maybe you might just decide to join a local choir.

I haven’t joined a choir yet, but I did sing to myself. My song choice for this challenge was Truly, Madly, Deeply by Savage Garden. I chose this song, not because I love it, but because of the nostalgic feeling it brings when I hear it. It takes me right back to my graduating year in high school, and high school was great for me, so I like that. Normally, I would sing something a little more upbeat and even of a different genre, but sometimes I like remembering the year my life really began (if only I knew then what I know now) and this song does that for me. I even snapped a candid shot of my daughter Liv, singing along with me today.

And this challenge was supposed to bring happiness. Oh my. But, once I put the camera down, we resumed our sing-a-long and all was well with the world again.

Tell me in the comments below what song you chose and why.

Until next time… keep singing.

Remember: Life is what you make it. Take lots of pictures.
