Are you into unicorns as much as the next person? Maybe you’d like to try your hand at a new recipe? Why not try Unicorn Kisses?

While looking through a variety of unicorn recipes, I stumbled upon, and was inspired by, Fun Money Mom’s recipe for Unicorn Kisses. It looked easy and fun, so I thought it would be something great to try with my girls.

Today’s post will show you a quick how-to video, and a detailed description on how to make this easy recipe. You will also find tips that might make your experience even better than ours. Look for what is written in bold or on an infographic. Those will be your step-by-step instructions.

How we made Unicorn Kisses: Video style.

If you prefer to read the steps, here they are:

First you’ll need:

You won’t want to skip the next step.

*** Whip these ingredients until the mixture peaks. If you don’t, the final result will be a flop.

Learn from my mistake:

My initial round of Unicorn Kisses had my final mixture looking more like soup than meringue. Why? I didn’t whip the first 4 ingredients before adding sugar. Always follow directions, folks. And have double the ingredients, too. Just in case.

Next add a cup of sugar, very slowly, beating on high the entire time.

If you followed directions properly up until this point, the sugary mixture will look light and fluffy like a beautiful meringue should.

Pour in 1/4 cup of sprinkles and blend into your fluffy mix. Use your favourite sprinkles or try mixing different ones.

Now grab your food colouring.

If you don’t own piping bags, a spoon will work just fine, but if you’re looking for the fancy swirls, piping bags and tips are the way to go.

Squirt small rosebud shaped cookies on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper.

Set the oven to 375 degrees and bake for 30 minutes. Enjoy!

I think you’ll agree:

When you bake with kids, sometimes things don’t always go as planned. When we created our Unicorn Kisses, that’s exactly what happened to us.

Having never used a piping bag before, I just let the girls have fun with it. Although Tiawna certainly formed the best Unicorn Kisses of all, they weren’t strategically placed and we weren’t sure what size the kisses were supposed to be. They ended up looking like this:

But wait!

If you’re looking to make the best of your experience with these Unicorn Kisses, take a few minutes to read over the Tips Section below. Meringue can be tricky. Using a piping bag can be tricky. The tips are not tricky. All treat, I promise.

Tips for making Unicorn Kisses right the first time

Tip 1: If you want your kisses bright in colour, you might want to invest in gel food colouring. We only used a couple of drops each, of four different colours. Our kisses didn’t turn out as bright as we hoped. If you’re just using regular colouring, you might want to try more drops.

Tip 2: Make your swirled kisses all the same size. Ours were a variety of sizes. Since Unicorn Kisses are basically cooked sugar, the sizes on the tray greatly affect cooking times. We had beautiful, tasty golden-brown kisses, and tiny, not-so-great-tasting, slightly charred kisses, all on the same pan.

Tip 3: Fill in your swirl completely with the mixture. If you leave any air pockets it will leave a hollow in your cookie and you risk burning it. It might look a little like this:

Tip 4: If you don’t have a piping bag, just go ahead and use a spoon. A tablespoon will work best, and be sure to get a heaping scoop. This will help you avoid those air pockets, as seen above, and will help the final result look light and fluffy. You can also cut out a small hole in the corner of a plastic baggie, but without the shaped tips, you’re unlikely to get the swirl shape effect of the kiss.

Tip 5: Watch your baking times. We only baked the smaller cookies for about 15 minutes. For the larger ones, we baked just under 30 minutes. The original recipe called to bake them for up to 45 minutes. This is quite a range in baking time, so be sure to keep your eye on the kisses throughout the process.

Tip 6: Working in a warm room? Cool your dish and/or your mixing whisks. I like to toss them in the freezer for about 10 minutes before I start. The fridge will do just fine, too. When the temperature is too warm, your mixture can get runny. This will affect how well you can swirl your unicorn kisses. As you can see from the picture above, we did not do this, originally. Our swirls turned out very flat in the end.

Unicorn Kisses will melt in your mouth.

I hope you enjoy creating your own little batch of Unicorn Kisses. Let me know if the tips helped you to create an even better batch than we ended up with. I can’t wait to read your comments and hear all about how they melted in your mouth.
